Summary:
Acclaimed Photographer JR has travelled to such countries as Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Brazil and Kenya, documenting the lives of a group of incredibly courageous women. In this film he discusses his remarkable project, “Women are Heroes.”
The spectacular two- and three-story black-and-white portraits, pasted on the walls of buildings in some of the world's most violent cities features women who are often the targets of tragic conflicts. He first began sharing their powerful, painful and provocative stories by displaying the enormous photographs in their country of origin.
After catching the attention of media worldwide JR’s culmination of poignant work has traveled across several continents, evoking reactions and emotions worldwide. On his website 28millimetres, JR explains that by photographing these women he intends to "underline their pivotal role and to highlight their dignity by shooting them in their daily lives and posting them on the walls of their country." Photographs of women in Kenya, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Liberia -- countries where "the violence suffered by women...is the extreme expression of discriminations" and includes "the worst crimes on women" -- convey "their force, their courage and their noble struggle: first to live, then to exist."
